Acupuncture is a Chinese system of healing that dates back thousands of years. The goal of an acupuncture treatment is to balance the body so that it can heal itself. Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for many different health conditions.

Acupuncture Complements Traditional Medicine as an adjunct to your traditional treatment plan. For example, many patients undergoing chemotherapy also use acupuncture as a way to lessen the side effects associated with chemotherapy. Acupuncture has also been used as a complementary therapy in the treatment of allergies, asthma, sinusitis, pain, hot flashes, insomnia, IBS, and infertility, and is used in conjunction with physical therapy for rehabilitation from serious injury. Acupuncture is also very effective when delivered in conjunction with a chiropractic treatment.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture addresses one's lifestyle as a whole, and treatments are intimately tailored to each individual's unique body and needs. Chinese Medicine takes a holistic view of the human body, using the body's own self-healing capabilities to bring itself back into balance. Acupuncture does this by affecting and modulating the body's homeostatic mechanisms—the circulation of blood and lymph, nerve impulses, respiration, and natural immune response—and releasing self-perpetuating muscle contractions called "trigger points". Studies have shown that acupuncture stimulates the release of various neurotransmitters that promote circulation, hormonal balance, and reduced inflammation.

What can I expect?

Acupuncture treatments involve placing hair-thin, flexible needles of varying lengths into certain areas of the skin. The number of slender needles and the length of time they are kept in place depends on the ailment being treated. During the treatment, the needles may be twirled, warmed or electrically energized to intensify healing effects. Some patients may feel a tiny prick when the needle is inserted. Others feel a tickle. But many patients don’t feel a thing.

Acupuncture sessions generally run for 15-30 minutes. Patients lie on a padded, warmed table, in a quiet room and are able to relax. Some patients say they feel a warmth, coolness, or tingling sensation during a treatment, which is good – because that means healing energy is moving through the body. Many people find acupuncture to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, and many end up falling asleep during the session and report feeling peaceful, yet energized afterward.

I'm scared of needles. Can I still have acupuncture?

Yes! We offer a non-needle, non-invasive type of acupuncture that is called electro-acupuncture. This style of acupuncture delivers a comfortable microcurrent that stimulates the very same points as traditional needle acupuncture. This type of acupuncture is very desirable and well-tolerated by children and adults alike.

Needles - are they safe?

Dr. Erickson is trained in a clean needle technique, and all of our sterile stainless steel needles are used once and then are disposed of properly. They are completely safe and hygienic.

Can acupuncture help me lose weight?

Yes! The stimulation of particular acupuncture points can be of great assistance in weight loss and an excellent companion to a healthy, well-balanced diet.
